5 -FIVE-

An artwork does not have its meaning fixed at the moment it is completed.

Once it leaves the time in which it was created, the artist changes, society shifts, and the experiences of those who encounter it accumulate. Through this passage of time, the work can reveal itself once again in a different form.

Goyo Gallery presents “5 -FIVE-”, NKSIN’s first solo exhibition in Japan in approximately five years.

The exhibition brings together five works selected from those previously presented by the artist.

They are not new works.

Yet bringing these works, created in the past, together in the same space today is not simply an act of looking back.

Throughout his practice, NKSIN has taken his own experiences and memories as points of departure, projecting questions surrounding society and the individual, the boundaries between oneself and others, and identity into his work.

While these questions are connected to the eras in which the works were created, they are never confined to those particular moments in time.

There are things that only become visible with the passage of time.
Things that once felt urgent.
Things that remain unchanged.
Things that have gradually faded into the distance.
And things that, at the time, had not yet found words or form.

Five works, each born in a different moment in time, are brought together in a single place: the present.

What emerges is not only the evolution of NKSIN’s artistic expression.

It is also the distance that has emerged between the works of the past and the artist he is today, and the signs of what may become his next expression, visible only because of that distance.

5 -FIVE-

Five works.
Five moments in time.
Five points along a journey.

Not to reminisce about the past,
but to understand the present and look toward what comes next.

This exhibition is both a presentation of NKSIN’s artistic journey and a gaze directed toward a future that has yet to take form as an artwork.

NKSIN

Born in Fukushima, Japan, in 1994. Primarily exhibits his work internationally. Self-taught as a painter, he creates works using airbrushes and spray paint. From a distinctive perspective, he explores his own roots, the conflicts of his youth, and issues within contemporary society.

His practice is characterized by an ironic and humorous hybrid style that blends 1990s American animation, Japanese subculture, and classical techniques from the Renaissance period.
