Hinako Sugiyama Solo exhibition “A Sign of Wind”

A Sign of Wind(風兆) presents the artistic expression Hinako Sugiyama has developed over the past two years, as well as new directions that are beginning to emerge from her practice.
In recent years, Sugiyama’s works have incorporated a greater diversity of motifs and elements than ever before, bringing new breadth to the composition and visual language of her paintings. The exhibition centers on works that embody these changes, alongside major pieces that represent the culmination of her artistic practice over the past two years.
The title “A Sign of Wind” derives from Sugiyama’s own description of her recent practice: “There is a different wind blowing now.”
Building upon the visual language she has cultivated to date, new motifs and sensations have begun to appear within her paintings. These elements suggest that Sugiyama’s artistic world is quietly, yet certainly, moving toward its next stage.
To sense “A sign of wind” is to perceive the arrival of an invisible change through the presence of the wind. While marking the past two years of Sugiyama’s artistic journey as an important turning point, this exhibition also presents a new sign of wind, pointing toward the future of Hinako Sugiyama’s practice.
