Duo exhibition「Back to the future」

Goyo Gallery will present a duo exhibition “Back to the future” by Yoshimasa Tsuchiya and Ken Yashiki.

After World War II, Japan’s growth was supported by the demand for post-war reconstruction. In the preface to the 1956 Economic White Paper, the phrase “The post-war period is over” was inscribed. Japan had recovered to pre-war levels and, while continuing its modernization, entered a period of high economic growth.

From a cultural perspective, post-war Japan was also a time when the country eagerly absorbed foreign cultures. Over the course of these 40 years, Japan made great strides as an economic power. Driven by “Japan Money,” the nation sought to acquire anything and everything worldwide, a trend that also extended into the art world. From the 1970s until the collapse of the bubble economy, roughly 20 years later, Japan reached a state of saturation and entered a chaotic period.

It was during this time that artists, who spent their formative years during these volatile times, emerged.

Drawing on the experiences and thoughts cultivated throughout their lives, these artists face the creation of their works for this exhibition with the keyword “30 Years Ago and 30 Years From Now” in mind. The time-traveling consciousness embedded within their works evokes an awareness of an intersecting timeline of past and future in the viewer, prompting a reconsideration of their own “life.”

The works of these two artists, who use traditional techniques to achieve contemporary forms of expression, serve as a bridge between the past and the future. While using the time they have lived as fuel, these artists are not bound by the past but challenge themselves to create with an eye toward the future. Their attitude and works, in turn, will be carried on to the next generation.
