Duo Exhibition
“Playing, Praying”
The sound of laughter echoes. Children are playing.
Their smiling faces are surrounded— sometimes, the scene feels almost divine.
It shakes the pure and immature feelings and memories within me and encourages introspection and healing.
In Akio Momota’s white porcelain crafts, a sense of “purity”—the purity and primordial beauty of the world exists, evoking a feeling akin to prayer in the viewer.
In Takahashi Maho’s works, “ANOKO” and other motifs are symbolic images of the era and culture, and strongly appeal to the viewer’s inner child. A uniquely Japanese aesthetic sense of “kawaii” is intervening, making the artworks both familiar and profoundly moving.
Play is an activity that develops creativity and social skills, provides an opportunity to learn and grow up while having fun. Prayer is a temporary break from daily life, an act to enhance spirituality, and a method to express inner peace and gratitude. These acts function as a way for humans to connect with something beyond the self and to strengthen bonds within the community. Prayer and play, each in its own way, bring enrichment to the inner world of human beings, adding both depth and color to their lives.
By blending symbolism as an icon, the pure sensitivity of the inner child, closeness through cuteness, and the purity of innocence, we hope to weave a story that will remain in the viewer’s heart that reflects various values and emotions in today’s society, and promote empathy and new discoveries for a large number of viewers.
Playing is connected to praying.
