Jini Solo Exhibition

Jini solo exhibition
Smudge it, touch it, as if drifting in between.
にじませて、触れて、そのあいだを漂うように。
I perceive the very act of drawing itself, lurking beyond the images that rise before my eyes, as my own medium. At the core of my practice lies the “body.” This body encompasses broad realms such as eros, sensuality, and texture, while also striving to be free from frameworks that fix gender and sexuality. I have explored methods of depicting this body through a lens distinct from existing norms. This alternative lens provides an opportunity to perceive the world from a different perspective, connecting to my fundamental creative concern. French feminist theory and practice, “écriture féminine,” has profoundly inspired me in its departure from existing linguistic systems and its search for new modes of writing. Drawing, where the process and movement leave traces, contains a correlation where the body is both content and medium. I consider this act to be akin to a kind of performance. In recent works, I extract the heat of contact, tactile sensations, textures, and emotional fluctuations, using motifs like alternative pornography (1) and pole dancers—entities that disrupt norms and open new possibilities for bodily expression. As Hélène Cixous (2) states, “Drawing depicts that which has no contour line” (3), my lines do not define outlines but rather pursue the tactile movement itself. Objects inherently possess no clear contour lines. Returning to this fact also opens a circuit to access the dimension of sensation.(1) Pornography that resists mainstream sexual expression and gender norms, expressing the body and pleasure.(2) Hélène Cixous (1937– ), an Algerian-born writer. She first coined the term écriture féminine (feminine writing).(3) Hélène Cixous, “Sans Arrêt, non, État de Dessination, non, plutôt: Le Décollage du Bourreau” (1991). ※ An essay on ‘writing’ and “drawing.”

In Jini’s work, “écriture féminine” and “a mode of perception independent of the visual” are practically intertwined. The “body” functions both as subject and medium, giving rise to expressions that counter the visual-centric paradigm upon which traditional pictorial language has relied.
Through Jini’s work, we can become acutely aware of how the “body” has been gazed upon and depicted under the structure of the gaze that frames and normalizes conventional gender and sexuality. Simultaneously, we encounter the potential for a new artistic language born from liberation from such structures. In recent years, through the interplay of theoretical research and production, Jini has presented expressions resisting mainstream visual systems and binary oppositional language structures with increasing clarity.
This gallery emphasizes sharing social concerns and contemporary contexts through art, valuing imagination that transcends national and cultural boundaries. Jini’s creative practice continuously engages with universal, transboundary themes like the body, gender, and sexuality, developing a tactile, intimate sensory language independent of existing norms—a practice that deeply resonates with our gallery’s context. This exhibition introduces the connections Jini has forged between “performance and painting,” “subject and medium,” and “artistic expression and sexuality,” along with the spiritual core of her practice.
